![]() That the person who came up with the name "Express" was really just having a joke at our expense. SSMS is nothing but a client tool and any version is backward compatible i.e can connect and do any activities on any instance have version same as or lower than that of the installed version. Can someone please help me with a straightforward explanation of what I need to do? None of this so-called "technology" is enhancing my life in any way and I assume BUt ideally theres no point in having multiple versions in same computer. ![]() I have now wasted a week of my life on this ridiculous nonsense and am about to give up. I simply want a small version of SQL Server and a Visual Tool such as SSMS to manage it so I can develop a small database driven website using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. None of which have worked and which I then removed. I have also downloaded a further bewildering array of updates, service packs, hot fixes and extensions to NET frameworks. This initially left me with a license error and I was forced to recover the whole operating system and re-install every software application. I had to download this update to SP2 in order to download SQL Server Express. ![]() "An error is encountered etc." no explanation is given. When I try to install 3.5 SP1 this fails. After installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Express I cannot install SSMS as a message appears saying I need to install.
